Early life of Maharana Pratap

Maharana Pratap was born in 1540 to Udai Singh II and Jaiwanta Bai of Mewar, during the time when Udai Singh triumphed over Vanvir Singh to claim the throne. Among his siblings were Shakti Singh, Vikram Singh, and Jagmal Singh, along with two stepsisters named Chand Kanwar and Man Kanwar. Maharani Ajabde Bai Punwar of Bijolia was his principal consort, and their firstborn was Amar Singh I.

Hailing from the prestigious Mewar royal lineage, Pratap became the 54th ruler of Mewar in the esteemed line of the Sisodia Rajputs upon Udai Singh’s demise in 1572. Despite Rani Dheer Bai Bhatiyani advocating for her son Jagmal to take the throne, the senior courtiers favored Pratap as the rightful heir.

Following the nobles’ decision, Pratap was anointed as Maharana Pratap and ceremoniously crowned in Gogunda on the festive occasion of Holi. Enraged by this turn of events, Jagmal sought retribution by aligning himself with Akbar’s forces in Ajmer and was granted the town of Jahazpur as a Jagir in appreciation for his allegiance.
