Story of Gauri Vrat
In the tale of the Jaya Parvati Vrat, a Brahmin woman earnestly observed this ritual to alleviate her husband from a perceived curse. The revered deities Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are venerated throughout this vrat. Furthermore, the Gujarati community upholds reverence for Goddess Gauri during the Ashadh Maas through the observance of Gauri Vrat.
The narrative underlying the Jaya Parvati Vrat unfolds with a Brahmin couple devoted to Lord Shiva. Despite possessing abundance in their lives, they yearned for a child. Their unwavering daily worship of Lord Shiva garnered divine favor, leading to a revelation: “A neglected Shiva Linga lies within a certain jungle.
Perform its puja there, and your desires shall be fulfilled.” Delighted by this message, the couple ventured into the jungle, locating the sacred Linga. While gathering flowers for the ritual, the Brahmin was bitten by a snake and fell unconscious. Distressed by his absence, his wife embarked on a search, fervently praying for his safety. Witnessing her profound devotion, Lord Shiva revived the Brahmin. Subsequently, the couple beseeched the Linga, ultimately being blessed with a son.
How to perform Gauri Vrat
During the Jaya Parvati vrat, refraining from tomatoes, salt, spices, and vegetables is a key practice. This vrat is thought to bring joy and bestow a harmonious married life upon the participant. To commence the vrat, wheat seeds are planted in a small container and placed near the household temple. Each morning, prayers are dedicated to the wheat seeds while adorning a nagla necklace with vermillion.
This ritual is repeated daily with watering the wheat seeds. The conclusion of the vrat involves a night-long vigil on the fifth day known as jagran. On the sixth day, after bathing and dressing in attire, the wheat seeds are removed from the pot and submerged in sacred waters. Following this, prayers are offered at the Mataji’s temple, and the fast is broken by partaking in a meal comprising wheat chapatis, salt, and vegetables.
