History of Vat Savitri Puja

In the ancient tales of the Mahabharata era, a poignant narrative unfolds. The king Asvapati and his queen Malavi yearn for a child to brighten their lives. Their fervent prayers are answered when the deity Savitr reveals that a daughter will soon grace their royal household. Joy fills the king’s heart at the promise of a child, and when the time comes, a daughter is born and christened Savitri in reverence to the divine being.

Blessed with unparalleled beauty and purity, Savitri casts a spell on all the men in her village, leaving them too awestruck to seek her hand in marriage. Undeterred by societal norms, her father encourages her to choose a life partner herself. Determined and resolute, Savitri embarks on a spiritual quest and crosses paths with Satyavan, the son of the exiled blind king Dyumatsena living amidst the wilderness.

Despite being warned by the wise Sage Narada of Satyavan’s impending fate – destined to perish within a year – Savitri remains steadfast in her decision and weds him. As the fateful day approaches, she undertakes a solemn vow of fasting and vigil, earning skepticism from her father-in-law but unwaveringly upholding her chosen path.

On the destined day of Satyavan’s demise, as he succumbs while working in the forest, Savitri cradles his lifeless form beneath a majestic Banyan tree. The god of Death, Yama, arrives to claim Satyavan’s soul, yet Savitri, bound by her spousal duty, follows him resolutely. Impressed by her unwavering devotion, Yama grants her several boons, save for the ultimate plea of restoring her husband’s life.

Initially, Savitri requests her father-in-law’s eyesight and the restoration of his kingdom, followed by a wish for a hundred children for her father and another hundred for herself and Satyavan. Yama faces a dilemma with the last wish, as it indirectly involves granting life to Satyavan. However, impressed by Savitri’s unwavering dedication and purity, he grants her another opportunity to choose a boon, excluding the clause regarding Satyavan’s life. Without hesitation, Savitri asks for Satyavan’s revival. Yama accedes to her request, bringing Satyavan back to life and bestowing eternal happiness upon Savitri.

Satyavan awakens as if from a profound slumber and reunites with his parents alongside his wife. Meanwhile, Dyumatsena regains his eyesight at home before Savitri and Satyavan’s return. With Satyavan unaware of the events, Savitri narrates the tale to her in-laws, husband, and the gathered ascetics. They commend her, and soon after, Dyumatsena’s ministers arrive with news of the demise of his rival. Overjoyed, the king and his retinue head back to his kingdom.

Although the tree holds minimal significance in the narrative, it is venerated in remembrance of the love depicted in the legend.
