History of National Childrens Day

The initial Flower Day event, later transformed into Children’s Day, was held on 5 November 1948 by the Indian Council of Child Welfare (ICCW) to support the United Nations Appeal for Children (UNAC) through the sale of flower tokens. By 30 July 1949, Children’s Day gained significant attention and was promoted extensively via various media platforms such as radio, articles, and cinema.

In 1951, V.M. Kulkarni, a United Nations Social Welfare Fellow, conducted a study on juvenile delinquent rehabilitation in the United Kingdom. During this research, Kulkarni observed the lack of a comprehensive care system for underprivileged children in India. Drawing inspiration from England’s Flag Day that raised funds for the “Save the Child Fund” on Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday, Kulkarni suggested designating Pandit Nehru’s birthday as Flag Day in India. This day’s objective would be to raise funds for non-governmental organizations dedicated to child welfare. Initially hesitant, Nehru eventually accepted this proposal.

While Nehru’s birthday (14 November) had been celebrated nationwide since 1947 with public events and children’s activities in his honor, it was not until 1954 that the day was formally acknowledged as Children’s Day. The inaugural commemoration of this nature occurred at Delhi’s National Stadium, drawing over 50,000 school children.

In 1957, 14 November was officially proclaimed Children’s Day in India through a special government decree. To commemorate this milestone, the Department of Posts and Telegraphs issued first day covers and three commemorative stamps featuring the name Bal Diwas (“Children’s Day”).

Children’s Favorite Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru held a special affection for children, affectionately known as “Chacha Nehru” or “Uncle Nehru”. Their unwavering trust in him brought immense joy to his life. As Prime Minister, Nehru was dedicated to creating an environment where children and their welfare were prioritized on a national level. In 1955, he founded the Children’s Film Society India to ensure that Indian children could see themselves represented in films.

In the book “My Days With Nehru” (1979) by M. O. Mathai, Nehru’s genuine care for children and their well-being is highlighted. He saw the future of India in their innocent faces and bright eyes. Nehru firmly believed that investing in children and their mothers was crucial for the nation’s future. In a 1958 interview with Ram Narayan Chaudhary, Nehru expressed his belief that today’s children would shape tomorrow’s India, emphasizing the importance of their upbringing in determining the nation’s destiny.

This belief is exemplified in Nehru’s letters to his daughter, Indira Gandhi, during her childhood, published in books such as “Letters from a Father to His Daughter” (1929) and “Glimpses of World History” (1934). These books are renowned for their warm and affectionate tone, as well as Nehru’s clear and spontaneous writing style, making them popular among children for their informative content and humanist values.

However, Sir Walter Crocker noted in the biography “Nehru: A Contemporary’s Estimate” (1966) that Nehru’s fondness for children was somewhat limited. Crocker observed that Nehru’s interactions with children were often perfunctory, particularly during public or television appearances. It could be argued that Nehru’s portrayal as a caring figure, especially as “Chacha” Nehru, was more of a facade than a genuine sentiment towards children.

This performance was most evident on his birthday, with orchestrated displays of children offering flowers and excessive photography sessions. These contrived events did not truly reflect his genuine interest in children, which remained minimal. It is important to note that Nehru’s public persona should not overshadow his true character, as his acting abilities were only peripheral aspects of his personality and should not be misunderstood as insincere.

A Day Dedicated to the Well-being and Rights of Children

National Children’s Day is not only a day of celebration but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the rights and well-being of children. It is a time to reflect on the progress made in ensuring that every child in India has access to education, healthcare, and a safe environment.

On this day, various activities and events are organized across the country to promote the rights of children and create a conducive environment for their growth and development. Schools, NGOs, and government organizations actively participate in these initiatives, emphasizing the importance of education, health, and protection for children.

The Importance of Celebrating National Children’s Day

Celebrating National Children’s Day is crucial as it reminds us of our responsibility towards the younger generation. It serves as a reminder to prioritize their needs, listen to their voices, and create a society that nurtures their dreams and aspirations.

Moreover, National Children’s Day provides an opportunity for parents, teachers, and caregivers to appreciate and acknowledge the unique qualities and talents of each child. It is a time to encourage their creativity, support their ambitions, and empower them to become responsible citizens of tomorrow.

Let us mark the 14th of November, 2024, on our calendars and join hands in celebrating National Children’s Day. Together, we can create a brighter future for the children of India.
