Ekadashi Date and Time in 2024: Lord Vishnu Special Day

Monthly Ekadashi Date and Time 2024 List

Ekadashi, known as ‘The eleventh day’ (Ekadashi Date) in Sanskrit, holds significance as the eleventh lunar day in both the waxing (Shukla Paksha) and waning (Krishna Paksha) phases of the Vedic calendar month. This observance is deeply rooted in Vaishnavism and Shaivism, representing essential paths within Sanatan Dharma. The devotees express their reverence to the deities Vishnu and Shiva through fasting or symbolic gestures, seeking self-discipline, spiritual benefits, and alignment with the Sanatam Dharma principles.

Fasting on ekadashi in Hinduism serves as a means to master the mind and senses, directing them towards spiritual growth. Apart from its spiritual significance, fasting during ekadashi is associated with various health advantages. During this period, foods rich in protein and carbohydrates like beans and grains are avoided, while fruits, vegetables, and dairy products become the preferred dietary choices. The fasting period commences from sunrise on ekadashi day and concludes at sunrise the following day, with rice being prohibited.

The timing of each ekadashi is determined by the moon’s position in the sky. The Indian calendar divides the lunar cycle from full moon to new moon into fifteen equal segments or tithis, with ekadashi representing the 11th tithi, corresponding to specific phases of the moon’s illumination. In the bright half of the lunar month, the moon appears approximately 3/4 full on ekadashi, while in the dark half, it is around 3/4 dark. In a typical year, there are 24 ekadashis observed, with occasional additional occurrences in leap years. Each ekadashi day is believed to offer unique benefits achievable through specific practices.

Meaning of Ekadashi

The tale of ekadashi traces back to a moment when Vishnu lay in repose or deep contemplation. Murdanav, a demon, advanced to assail Vishnu. Suddenly, a stunning lady emerged from Vishnu’s 11th sense (often referred to as the “mind”). Enamored, Murdanav proposed marriage to her, but she stipulated that he must first defeat her in combat. In the ensuing battle, Murdanav met his demise. Upon awakening, Vishnu bestowed blessings upon the woman, christening her “Ekadashi,” and proclaimed that observing a fast on this day would lead to spiritual liberation.

Ekadashi Vrat Date in 2024

Occasionally, Ekadashi fasting may be recommended to be practiced over two consecutive days. It is recommended that those following the Smartha tradition, along with their families, observe fasting only on the first day. The second Ekadashi fasting, known as the alternate fasting, is advised for Sanyasis, widows, and individuals aspiring for spiritual liberation. In cases where the alternate Ekadashi fasting is recommended for Smartha followers, it aligns with the Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day. Fasting on both Ekadashi days is suggested for devoted individuals who ardently seek the love and blessings of Lord Vishnu.
