Story Behind Chitra Pournami
The story of Chitra Purnima revolves around Indra, the ruler of the gods, and his mentor Brihaspati, as recounted in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam. It is said that a disagreement arose between Indra and Brihaspati due to something Indra mentioned to him. Brihaspati, who was Indra’s teacher, advised him to undertake a journey to earth to cleanse himself of his negative actions.
Indra agreed and fulfilled his teacher’s directive. During his travels, Indra stumbled upon a shivalinga beneath a kadamba tree. He later realized that it was Shiva who was guiding him in redeeming his misdeeds. Indra then began offering lotus flowers to Shiva as a gesture of reverence. Followers believe this tale transpired in Madurai, where worshippers conduct rituals at the Meenakshi Temple to pay homage to Shiva.

In certain regions of India, there is a festival dedicated to Chitragupta, a revered Hindu deity tasked with recording the actions of individuals for Yama, the god of death and the underworld.
