Parashurama, also known as Rama with an axe, is considered the sixth avatar of Vishnu in Hinduism. Born to Jamadagni and Renuka, he was prophesied to emerge during a time of great turmoil on Earth when the Kshatriya class abused their power and oppressed the people. Parashurama restored balance by defeating the Kshatriya warriors twenty-one times.
He is revered as one of the Immortals and is believed to reappear as the guru of Kalki, Vishnu’s final incarnation, at the end of the Kali Yuga. Married to Dharani, an embodiment of Lakshmi, Parashurama is also featured in the Ramayana, where he clashes with Rama, and is mentioned in the Mahabharata as the mentor of prominent figures like Bhisma, Drona, Rukmi, and Karna.

Story Behind the Life of Parashurama
In Hindu legend, Parashurama is said to have been the offspring of the sage Jamadagni and his Kshatriya wife, Renuka. The couple, as per local beliefs, resided in a humble abode situated in Janapav. They possessed a divine cow named Surabhi, which had the power to grant their every wish (Surabhi being the offspring of the cow Kamadhenu).
A ruler named Kartavirya Arjuna, distinct from the Pandava Arjuna, discovered the existence of this miraculous cow and coveted it. Despite Jamadagni’s refusal to part with the cow, the king seized it in Parashurama’s absence. Jamadagni appealed for the return of the cow, but the king responded by fatally striking him with his fist.
Upon learning of this heinous act, Parashurama was incensed. Wielding his axe, he challenged the king to a duel. The two engaged in combat, with Parashurama emerging victorious and putting an end to the king’s life, as recounted in the Padma Purana.
Confrontation with Rama: A Gripping Narrative
During Rama’s journey back to Ayodhya with Sita after their wedding in Mithila, various ominous signs crossed their path. Amongst the chaos of an earthquake and a dust storm, the legendary Parashurama unexpectedly appears before them. Following the acceptance of a ritual offering, Parashurama challenges Rama to a duel, requiring Rama to showcase his prowess by stringing the sage’s bow, Sharanga, and firing an arrow.
Despite Dasharatha’s pleas for leniency, Parashurama narrates the bow’s divine origins and its storied past, appealing to Rama’s martial abilities. Rama effortlessly strings the bow, causing Parashurama to lose his divine strength. Acknowledging Rama as Vishnu’s incarnation, a humbled Parashurama seeks permission to retire to Mount Mahendra for meditation and spiritual growth. After paying homage to Rama, Parashurama departs for his hermitage.
Confrontation with Bhishma – Epic Battle Scene
Parashurama steps in to advocate for Princess Amba in the Mahabharata, vowing to instruct his disciple Bhishma to fulfill his duty and marry her after she is abducted. Upon Parashurama’s arrival at Kurukshetra with his entourage, he sends a message to Bhishma to announce his presence. Bhishma pays his respects to his mentor when he arrives.
Parashurama orders Bhishma to take Amba as his wife, but Bhishma, bound by his vow of celibacy, declines. This refusal angers Parashurama, who threatens Bhishma with death. Despite Bhishma’s attempts to pacify him, Parashurama remains resolute, leading to a confrontation between them over Bhishma’s Kshatriya duty. Even Ganga’s intervention fails to halt the impending battle. The fierce conflict lasts for 23 days, yielding no victor.
On the 24th day, prompted by divine counsel from Narada and the gods, Bhishma prepares to unleash a lethal weapon. At this critical juncture, Parashurama intervenes, ending the strife and declaring the battle a stalemate. Parashurama recounts the events to Amba, advising her to seek Bhishma’s protection, but she rejects his counsel in a fit of rage, determined to achieve her goals through asceticism.
