Tamil Puthandu Naal 2025
Puthandu, also referred to as Tamil New Year, marks the commencement of the year on the Tamil calendar and is an occasion traditionally honored as a festival by Tamil Hindus. The festival’s timing aligns with the solar cycle of the solar Hindu calendar, specifically falling on the initial day of the Tamil month Chithirai. This date typically corresponds to around the 14th of April each year on the Gregorian calendar. While it serves as the traditional new year in South and South East Asia, it goes by different names such as Vishu in Kerala, and Vaisakhi or Baisakhi in central and northern India.
During this festive day, Tamil individuals exchange greetings by expressing “Puttaṇṭu valttukal!” (புத்தாண்டு வாழ்த்துகள்) or “Iniya puttantu nalvaḻttukal!” (இனிய புத்தாண்டு நல்வாழ்த்துகள்), essentially conveying “Happy new year”. This day is cherished as a time for families to come together. Homes are tidied, an assortment of fruits, flowers, and auspicious articles is arranged on a tray, the family puja altar is illuminated, and visits are made to local temples. People don new attire, children show their reverence to elders and seek their blessings, followed by a family gathering to relish a vegetarian banquet.
Puthandu is commemorated by Tamils residing in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, and Reunion. Happy Celebration of Tamil New Year
The Tamil community joyfully observes Puthandu, known as Puthuvarusham, heralding the onset of the traditional “Tamil/Hindu New Year”, according to Peter Reeves. Falling within the month of Chittirai, the primary month of the Tamil solar calendar, Puthandu typically arrives on the 14th of April. In certain regions of Southern Tamil Nadu, this celebration is referred to as Chittirai Vishu.
Preceding Puthandu, a special tray is meticulously prepared, featuring three fruits (mango, banana, and jackfruit), betel leaves and arecanut, exquisite gold or silver ornaments, coins or money, fragrant flowers, and a reflective mirror. This custom bears resemblance to the ceremonial tray observed during the Vishu new year festival in Kerala. According to Tamil customs, setting eyes on this festive tray upon awakening on the new year day is considered highly auspicious. Intricate designs known as kolams, created using colored rice powder, adorn home entrances in a lavish display of festivity.
