History of Republic Day

India gained independence from the British Raj on 15 August 1947 after the successful Indian independence movement led by Congress under Mahatma Gandhi’s guidance. The Indian Independence Act of 1947, passed by the UK Parliament, facilitated the partition of British India into two new independent dominions within the British Commonwealth. India transitioned into a constitutional monarchy with George VI as the head of state and Earl Mountbatten serving as governor-general. In the absence of a standalone constitution, Indian laws were governed by the Government of India Act 1935 and overseen by the Constituent Assembly of India.

To draft a permanent constitution, a seven-member committee, with B R Ambedkar as the chairman, was appointed on 29 August 1947. The committee presented a draft constitution to the Constituent Assembly on 4 November 1948. Following extensive discussions and debates, the constitution was officially adopted by the constituent assembly on 26 November 1949. The majority of the constitution came into effect on 26 January 1950, marking the inauguration of Rajendra Prasad as India’s first President. Consequently, the constituent assembly transformed into the Parliament of India under the new constitution’s transitional provisions. This date was specifically selected as a tribute to the Indian National Congress’ declaration of Purna Swaraj (complete independence) on the same day in 1930.

The air is filled with excitement and anticipation as the nation awaits this extraordinary event that promises to be a grand spectacle of national pride.

Significance of Republic Day

After gaining independence from British rule, the newly formed nation of India embarked on the monumental task of drafting a constitution that would shape its future. This arduous task was entrusted to a drafting committee led by the esteemed Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a visionary and scholar. The Indian Constitution, a document of immense significance and promise, came into effect on 26 January 1950, solidifying India’s status as a sovereign and independent republic.

The choice of this particular date was not arbitrary; rather, it was steeped in historical significance. On 26 January 1930, the Indian National Congress boldly proclaimed Purna Swaraj, declaring India’s unequivocal independence from the shackles of colonial rule. Thus, the date of 26 January stands as a powerful symbol of India’s journey from subjugation to sovereignty, a beacon lighting the path toward a brighter future.

Customs and Celebrations of Republic Day

On the eve of this Day, a momentous occasion in the nation’s history, the President delivers a heartfelt address to the entire country, reflecting on the values of unity, democracy, and progress. Then, on the day of the Republic Day itself, the President of India proudly unfurls the vibrant national flag in the majestic setting of the national capital, New Delhi, surrounded by distinguished guests and dignitaries. Simultaneously, across the diverse states and union territories, Governors and Lieutenant Governors also participate in this symbolic act of patriotism, unfurling the flag with reverence and pride, marking the celebration of the country’s sovereignty and democratic principles.

The Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi are a grand spectacle held at the Kartavya Path, a majestic boulevard that stretches from Rashtrapati Bhavan on Raisina Hill to India Gate. This event, presided over by the President of India, features elaborate parades and cultural presentations. The Ministry of Defence organizes the Delhi Republic Day parade, showcasing units from the army, navy, air force, para-military, and police forces for the President, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces.

Each year, a distinguished head of state or government from another country is invited as the esteemed chief guest for the Republic Day festivities in New Delhi. The selection of the guest country is often influenced by strategic, economic, and political considerations. For instance, French President Emmanuel Macron was honored as the chief guest during India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations.

The Beating Retreat ceremony, held on the evening of 29 January at Vijay Chowk, signifies the culmination of the Republic Day festivities. Military bands representing the three branches of the Indian armed forces perform, with the President of India escorted by the President’s Bodyguard. Following a ceremonial salute, the Indian National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana, fills the air. The musical repertoire includes beloved tunes like Abide With Me and Saare Jahan Se Achcha.

On the eve of Republic Day, the President of India bestows various civilian Padma Awards. Instituted in 1954, these prestigious honors are classified into three categories based on precedence. The Padma Vibhushan recognizes exceptional and distinguished service, standing as the second highest civilian accolade. The Padma Bhushan is conferred for distinguished service of a high order, ranking as the third highest civilian honor. Lastly, the Padma Shri is bestowed for distinguished service, representing the fourth highest civilian distinction. Recipients receive a certificate and a medallion; however, these awards do not include monetary rewards or special privileges. Additionally, a commemorative brochure detailing each awardee’s achievements is released during the investiture ceremony.
