Who is Devi Chhinnamasta?
The sixth revered among the Ten Mahavidyas, Goddess Chhinnamasta is a figure of great wisdom and power. Legend has it that Goddess Parvati, in a moment of forgetfulness, took a prolonged bath in the Mandakini river with her two companions. As time passed and hunger gnawed at her attendants, they found it impossible to capture the attention of the deity, lost in her cleansing ritual.
When Goddess Parvati (Bhavani) became aware of the time, she, in a state of guilt, decapitated herself. Three distinct streams of blood emerged; her aides quenched their hunger with two, while the third was consumed by the Goddess herself. From that day forward, she has been revered as Chhinnamasta Devi.
