Shasti Date and Time in 2024
The sixth day of both the waxing and waning phases of the moon in every lunar month in the Hindu calendar marks the observance of Shasti. This means there are two instances of Shasti each month. Notably, when Shasti falls during the waning phase, it is linked with Lord Subrahmanya or Lord Murugan.
Rituals of Skanda Shasti
Fasting holds a significant place in daily rituals, with devotees observing either a partial or full fast on Shasti to seek the favor of Lord Murugan. The fasting period commences at sunrise and concludes the following day after offering prayers to the Sun God.
Those adhering strictly to the fast abstain from food for a complete 24 hours, while others opt for partial fasting by consuming fruits. Individuals with health concerns may follow the Shasti fast by having a single meal during the day.
During the Shasti vrat, participants are advised against consuming certain spices, and the consumption of non-vegetarian food and alcohol is strictly forbidden. Moreover, devotees of Murugan engage in reading the ‘Skanda Purana’ and reciting the ‘Skanda Shasti Kavacham’ on this auspicious day, often culminating in visits to Lord Murugan’s temples in the evening.
Significance of Skanda Shasti
Shasti marks a sacred occasion dedicated to venerating Lord Murugan, the Hindu deity revered as the God of War. Known by various names such as ‘Kartikeya’, ‘Subramaniya’, ‘Skanda’, ‘Kumara Swami’, and ‘Kumaran’, Lord Murugan is the illustrious offspring of Lord Shiva and Parvati, assuming the esteemed role of Commander-in-Chief of the celestial army. This divine entity is predominantly adored in regions enriched with Tamil heritage.
Tamil Nadu proudly hosts the six eminent abodes of Lord Murugan, each holding profound significance. According to Hindu lore, it was on the auspicious day of Shasti that Lord Murugan emerged triumphant in vanquishing the malevolent demon ‘Soorapadman’.
Devotees fervently believe that those who devoutly offer prayers and partake in fasting rituals on Shasti will be showered with abundant blessings from the benevolent deity, Lord Murugan.
